How to Choose the Right Web Designer in Cairns: 19 Questions Every Business Should Ask

For many years a website was simply a box businesses had to tick. Homepage, About Us, Contact Us, add your logo and some colours.

Buy a domain name, add some photos, write a few paragraphs about your services and you had an online presence.

In 2026 that’s no longer enough.

Cairns is growing, competition is increasing, and the way customers discover local businesses is changing faster than ever before. Choosing the right web designer is no longer just about having a good-looking website. It’s about finding someone who understands planning and digital strategy, search visibility, AI-driven search behaviour and how local businesses can compete online. SEO in Cairns is becoming increasingly competitive and I’m always looking for what’s changing in the market and with Goolge.

Cairns Is Growing Faster Than Many Businesses Realise

One of the reasons I am so passionate about website strategy in Far North Queensland is because of the opportunity that exists here.

According to Cairns Regional Council and Choose Cairns economic data, the Cairns region now supports more than 14,800 registered businesses, over 88,500 jobs and an estimated population exceeding 175,000 residents. Cairns continues to serve as the commercial hub of Far North Queensland, supporting businesses throughout the Northern Beaches, Port Douglas, Mareeba and the Atherton Tablelands. The local economy now exceeds $11 billion annually and continues to diversify beyond tourism.

That’s fantastic news for local businesses.

It’s also a challenge.

Every year more businesses are competing for the same customers online. Whether you’re a builder in Smithfield, a dentist in Redlynch, an accountant in Cairns North or a tourism operator in Port Douglas, your customers are researching online before they pick up the phone.

The days of relying solely on word-of-mouth referrals are disappearing. Word-of-mouth means you’re going with a trusted local but are you going with someone who knows what web design should be in 2026 is the question you should be asking.

Your Website Is No Longer Just A Brochure

The biggest mistake I see businesses make is treating their website like a digital brochure.

A modern website should:

  • Generate enquiries
  • Build trust
  • Demonstrate expertise
  • Capture leads
  • Support SEO
  • Support AI search discovery
  • Help customers make decisions

A website should be one of the hardest-working assets in your business.

If it isn’t producing measurable business outcomes, then it may not be delivering value.

The Biggest Change In 2026: Search Has Changed

Ten years ago SEO was largely about ranking pages for keywords. You would simply choose a keyword with volume you knew your competitor was ranking for and build something better.

Today, Google’s search results are becoming increasingly influenced by:

  • Entity understanding
  • Structured data (schema)
  • Topical authority
  • User experience
  • Helpful content
  • AI-generated search summaries

Businesses that are still approaching their website as a collection of pages rather than a strategic content platform are likely to fall behind.

The best websites in 2026 are not simply ranking for a handful of keywords.

They are becoming trusted sources of information within their industry and showing up in AI chat as well.

Why Local Knowledge Matters

A web designer based in Cairns understands things that an interstate agency often won’t.

They understand:

  • The importance of tourism to the local economy
  • The growth of the Northern Beaches corridor
  • The increasing competition within construction and trade industries
  • The opportunities emerging across health, professional services and education
  • The unique buying behaviours of Far North Queensland consumers

A website built for a Sydney audience isn’t necessarily the same website needed for a Cairns audience.

Our local case study – Cairns Port Douglas VIP Transfers

In 2023 I met with the local business Cairns Port Douglas VIP Transfers, a business based out of Cairns working in the busy tourist market shuttling people back and forth between our airport and their destination. We improved their business by introducing not only a brochure site but creating a site that had an integrated booking system complete with connection to a bookings calendar managed from Office365 and payment system that also generated an invoice and emailed it automatically.

Questions Every Cairns Business Should Ask Before Hiring A Web Designer

Experience

How long have you been building websites?

Can I see examples relevant to my industry?

Ownership

Will I own my website?

Can I transfer it elsewhere if I choose?

Who owns the domain name?

SEO

How do you approach SEO?

Do you not only consider SEO but also AIO/AEO and GEO needs in your analysis across Cairns businesses?

How do you perform keyword research?

How do you identify content opportunities?

Support

Where is your support team located?

How quickly do you respond?

What ongoing costs should I expect?

Do you maintain and host my site?

What about website security?

Strategy

How do you measure success?

What does your process look like?

How do you ensure the website generates enquiries?

What To Watch Out For

Not every provider is the right fit.

Be cautious of:

  • Extremely cheap websites
  • No portfolio
  • Unclear ownership arrangements
  • Locked-in platforms
  • Promises of guaranteed rankings
  • Agencies that focus on tactics rather than strategy

A website should be an investment, not simply an expense.

My View On The Future Of Website Design In Cairns

I believe the businesses that will perform best over the next five years are those that combine:

  • Strong websites
  • Helpful content
  • SEO best practices
  • AI search readiness
  • Clear messaging
  • Genuine local expertise

The businesses that continue treating their website as a once-off project rather than an ongoing marketing asset may find it increasingly difficult to compete.

Final Thoughts

Cairns presents enormous opportunities for local businesses.

The region is growing, investment continues to flow into Far North Queensland and competition online is increasing every year. Choosing the right web designer is no longer simply about aesthetics. It’s about finding a strategic partner who understands how websites, content, SEO and AI-driven search work together to attract customers.

The right website should not just look professional.

It should help your business grow.

He knows the value lies beyond what someone sees and aspires to build a better website for all of his clients that exceeds the last. With a healthy desire to build sites that are easy to maintain and faster than the rest. He has years of experience working for government and an IT background that extends into security and governance.

Moving to Cairns in 2023 for my wife and family who started work as the deputy principle at Freshwater Christian College. We moved here after 30 years in Wagga wanting a life change that would set our children up to be young adults, industry opportunities and starting their own families. With two girls and a boy approaching their twenties we knew wherever they met their partners and had kids was going to be where we’d be for the rest of our lives. We chose Cairns as that forever place and haven’t looked back.

While most of my portfolio reflects 20 years of Wagga, Sydney NSW type work I am looking to grow other businesses here in FNQ. My first client was Cameron Nightingale from Cairns Port Douglas VIP Transfers.

Personal note from the author

That’s it, as you can tell I’m super passionate about quality in web design, raising the profile of the people who work hard in this industry and have so many valuable skills that get tossed aside as anyone can do that.

I only encourage marketing agencies who do best practice and not cutting corners.

Clearly I’m not a fan of the DIY beginner designer crowd but understand people need to start somewhere and these tools have a place. I’ve also tried not to be too platform subjective with my approach but there’s a lot of tricks to watch out for here that can lock you in and cost you thousands.

If you’ve found this article useful reach out and if we’re a good fit for web designer and customer and can deliver what you’re after at the cost you expect we’d love the opportunity to work with you.
